Pelangi Strategy advisory office

Kuala Lumpur · Senior Advisory

Advisory work for firms that have already done their thinking.

Pelangi Strategy works with Malaysian businesses at moments of structural significance — before a market move, a leadership transition, or a board reconfiguration. We engage with limited mandates, high discretion, and no proprietary products to sell.

What We Do

Three engagements. Each with a defined scope.

Our work is structured around a small number of mandates that we understand in depth. We do not offer retainers or general advisory. Each engagement has a clear beginning, a specific deliverable, and an agreed end.

Cross-border market entry

Cross-Border Market Entry Brief

A structured assessment for Malaysian firms considering operations in adjacent ASEAN jurisdictions. We examine regulatory posture, distribution landscape, currency practicalities, and the commercial groundwork required before a material commitment.

  • Written brief with senior judgement
  • One-day debrief with leadership team
  • Proceed / slow down / reconsider recommendation

Governance structure review

Governance Structure Review

A focused review of board composition, decision rights, and the documented and informal authority structures of an established firm. Often commissioned before a fundraising round, an external audit, or a leadership transition.

  • Conducted with full discretion
  • Written findings and recommendations
  • Draft revised governance memorandum

Reading session for founders

Reading Session for Founders

A half-day engagement for founders who want to work through current operating documents with a senior counterpart. We arrive having read the materials. The session is unstructured by design — its value lies in the discipline of being asked the right questions in person.

  • Materials reviewed in advance
  • Half-day in-person session
  • One-page written note follows

Why Firms Choose Us

What distinguishes our approach

No junior staffing

The person you speak with at the outset is the person who does the work. We do not hand mandates to associates or delegate the substantive thinking.

Written deliverables

Every engagement ends with a written document. Presentations and verbal summaries are not substitutes for clear, considered writing that can be revisited and shared.

Discretion as standard

We do not publish client names, discuss mandates in public, or use your situation as a reference point for marketing. Confidentiality is not a service tier — it is how we operate.

Nothing to sell you

We hold no proprietary financial products, software platforms, or implementation services. Our only interest is in giving you an accurate picture of your situation.

ASEAN context

Our work is anchored in the Malaysian business environment and the adjacent ASEAN markets — not imported frameworks designed for different contexts and then retrofitted.

Defined scope, clear end

We do not extend mandates indefinitely. Each engagement has a defined scope, a fixed deliverable, and a clear closing point. You know what you are paying for before we start.

Begin the Conversation

Is this the right moment to bring in outside perspective?

Many of our conversations start with a founder or senior partner who knows something needs addressing but has not yet decided on the form of engagement. We are comfortable with that. An initial call costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Common Questions

Questions we are often asked

What kinds of firms do you typically work with?
We work with established Malaysian businesses at a moment of deliberate change. That might be a family-owned firm approaching a second-generation transition, a growth-stage company preparing for its first institutional capital raise, or an entrepreneur considering their first material move outside the domestic market. The common thread is that the principal has already done a significant amount of their own thinking and wants a structured outside view.
How long does a typical engagement take?
It depends on the engagement type. The Reading Session for Founders is a single half-day, followed by the written note. The Governance Structure Review usually takes two to three weeks of document review and internal interviews, then the deliverable. The Market Entry Brief varies with the complexity of the target jurisdiction, but most complete within three to four weeks from engagement. We set expectations clearly at the outset.
Do you offer retainers or ongoing advisory arrangements?
We do not. Each engagement is scoped individually with a defined deliverable and a clear closing point. This is a deliberate choice — it keeps our attention focused and prevents the mandate drift that tends to dilute the value of open-ended advisory relationships. If a client finds the initial engagement useful and wants to commission further work, we are open to that discussion on the same terms.
Are the prices listed on your site fixed?
The published prices represent our standard fees for each engagement as structured. In some cases, where the scope of a market entry brief or governance review is materially different from our standard approach — for example, covering multiple jurisdictions or involving a more complex organisational structure — we will discuss revised terms before committing to the work. We do not bill by the hour.
How do I know if my situation is suitable for one of these engagements?
The most direct way is to contact us with a brief description of your situation and what you are hoping to address. We will tell you honestly whether our work is a reasonable fit, and if not, we will say so. There is no cost for that initial conversation.
How is client information handled?
All materials shared with us in the course of an engagement are treated as confidential. We do not retain client documents after an engagement concludes, and we do not use client names or situations in any marketing or public communications. A formal non-disclosure agreement is available on request, though most clients prefer to work without one.
